Cell Phone Radiation Dangers. Fact or Fiction?

by Cell Phone Protection on November 10, 2010

The emergence of cellular phones in our modern lives has become a prevailing necessity. Nowadays, vast majority of the world population are hooked with this tiny yet powerful gadget. From a simple device that served only as a call and text now becomes a communication tool package that knows no limits. Mobile or cellular phones have thus become indispensable.

But little did we know of the dangers it poses to our health. Serious concern is escalating over the years on the mushrooming use of the handy mobile cellular telephone, or cell-phone. These phones are arguably the most radioactive appliance humans have yet invented. It is well known that high levels of RF (Radio Frequency) can produce biological damage through heating effects, same as how our microwave oven works.

The effect of this radio frequency (RF) is very alarming to us humans. As high frequency radio radiation penetrates the body, the exposed molecules move about and collide with one another causing friction and heat. If the radiation is powerful enough, the tissue or skin will be heated or burned. Synonymous to this is the EMF (electromagnetic frequency) radiation describes the continually flowing electrons that form invisible fields of energy all around us. EMF radiation from power lines, appliances, radars, TVs, phones, computers, microwaves, etc. are already considered by many to be potentially hazardous to both mental and physical health. Those who live or work within an electromagnetic field is at risk.

Studies have shown that cell phones have been linked with a wide range of health problems including headaches, earaches, eye and vision problems, memory loss, nausea, fatigue, brain tumors, or even DNA alteration or damage and even changes in the brain’s electrical activity. Researches particularly the effects among children and pregnant mothers are alarming.

What about Wi-Fi computer signals? Can they interfere with sleep? The scientific jury is still out, but consider this: Kevin Koym, who owns a consulting company and a software engineering firm in Austin, Tex., says of his struggles with insomnia: “I never had sleep problems until I started using Wi-Fi So now I am careful to shut off my computer at home in the evening.”

For years, much have been rake over and publicized of the many lawsuits filed against cell phone companies. Countries like US, Great Britain, Austria, Germany, Sweden etc. have undertaken measures to delve into the issue and made strong regulations for the telecommunication industry. The concern has been strong and on-going. The extent of these safety issues lies on the fact that needs not be taken for granted.

Cell Phone Dangers – Protecting Our Homes From Cell Phone Radiation

By Mike Arms

There are over 4 billion cell phone users throughout the world today – that’s about 4 people out of every 6 living on this planet and owning a cell phone, subscribed to a cellular phone plan, or living with someone who owns a mobile phone. The ubiquity of wireless phones brings to the fore certain issues related to this device, like cell phone dangers to human health.

All mobile phones, when turned on, emit electromagnetic radiation in the microwave radio frequency range. It is this cell phone radiation, as it is absorbed by human tissue (most commonly in the head, as you place the phone next to your ear when you talk) that has come under intense scrutiny this past decade. Several epidemiological and experimental studies have associated prolonged cell phone use to sleeping disorder, cognitive problems, headaches, stress, brain tumors, and cancer.

Experiment Without Controls

On the other hand, studies with opposing results and observations have also been published. CTIA, the wireless industry’s lobbying association pointed out to studies or statements from the World Health Organization (WHO), the American Cancer Society, and the FDA downplaying potential cell phone dangers, “all have concurred that wireless devices are not a public health risk.”

But, as Professor Devra Davis, at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute explains, “the latency between exposure and brain cancer could be 20 or 30 years” and by using cellular devices without any clear understanding of cell phone dangers, “we are basically treating ourselves like lab rats in an experiment without any controls”

The verdict is still out, obviously, but are you willing to take the risk?

Protect Yourself

Today, at the Consumer Electronics Show 2010 in Las Vegas, a company called Pong Research has announced the availability of a product called Pong BlackBerry Curve Case which claims to reduce users’ exposure to mobile phone radiation by 60%. Until this product is introduced by other manufacturers to cover other brands and will be marketed widely, however, we all just have to take certain precautionary measures to protect ourselves from suspected cell phone dangers:

Keep your cell phone away from your body. The greatest exposure to cellular phone radiation is when it is 6 inches or less from any body part.

Text more, talk less. Take only the most important calls or make the least amount of calls on your phone and transmit messages through SMS.

Use headset or speakerphone function. wireless phone radiation is emitted directly from a unit’s built-in antenna. Using a headset ensures that the actual cell phone is located away from your head, which can easily absorb EMF radiation.

Use your land line. It’s definitely safer to talk on the land line than on a mobile phone, because this lessens your exposure to radiation.

Turn off your cell phone while charging. Not only will you charge your phone faster, it will also cut down on radiation emission from your cell to which everyone in your house or office is exposed to.

Purchase or use phones that have been certified or tested to emit the least amount of radiation. The Environmental Working Group has prepared an exhaustive list covering over 1,000 phones currently in the market, and they have come up with a list of the 10 best phones (with least radiation output) to use.

Keep cellular phones away from children. Children’s skulls are thinner and their brains are less dense than adult brains, radio frequency signals can penetrate deeper into a child’s brain than in an adult’s.

Theres a greater concern for children because the life-time exposure will be much higher, says Jane Houlihan of the Environmental Working Group. In the United States, as many as seven in ten children between the ages of 12 and 17 own a mobile phone, and half use them daily, according to the New York Times.

At the moment, there is no conclusive, peer-reviewed evidence that points to cell phone dangers from radiation exposure. The science is evolving on this subject, but if we must err, it should be on the side of caution. When it comes to our health and those of our children, nothing should be left to chance, let’s always protect ourselves.

Cell Phone Radiation: Top 10 Least Radiation-Emitting Cell Phones of 2009

By Mike Arms

All cell phones, once powered on, emit certain amounts of electromagnetic radiation in the microwave radio frequency range. During the past 15 years or so, when mobile phone use has become phenomenally prevalent worldwide, the effects of this radiation on human health has come under intense study and has been the subject of numerous heated debates. These past years, we’ve seen report after report that associated prolonged mobile phone use and exposure to differing amounts of cellular phone radiation to brain tumors, cancer, stress, headaches, cognitive problems, and sleep disorders.

Most of these studies, however, have either been disputed by other scientists or deemed as biased by other groups who also produced evidence to the contrary. As such, there’s no definitive, undisputed conclusion, as of yet, about cell phone dangers. Scientists warn, correctly, that there’s so much that we don’t know about the effects of cellular phone radiation, and that the full impact may actually be known years from now when it is too late to reverse any damage.

The latency between exposure and brain cancer could be 20 or 30 years, observes Professor Devra Davis, at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. By using cellular devices without any clear understanding of the dangers, we are basically treating ourselves like lab rats in an experiment without any controls

To mitigate potential cell phone dangers, experts recommend certain safe practices in using wireless devices. Some of the most common recommendations are: Keep your mobile phone away from your body, text more and talk less, use headset or speakerphone function, use your land line, turn off your mobile phone while charging, keep cell phones away from children, and purchase or use phones that have been certified or tested to emit the least amount of radiation.

It is with the intention of educating the public about the dangers of mobile phone radiation that the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has conducted an exhaustive study, covering over a thousand cell phone models in the market, detailing the amount of radiation that each mobile phone emits. The EWG is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded in 1993 by Ken Cook and Richard Wiles, that aims to “use the power of public information to protect public health and the environment.”

Here are the 10 least radiation-emitting cell phones, according to the EWG report:

1. Samsung Impression (SGH-a877) AT&T

2. Motorola RAZR V8 CellularONE

3. Samsung SGH-t229 T-Mobile

4. Samsung Rugby (SGH-a837) AT&T

5. Samsung Propel Pro (SGH-i627) AT&T

6. Samsung Gravity (SGH-t459) CellularONE, T-Mobile

7. T-Mobile Sidekick T-Mobile

8. LG Xenon (GR500) AT&T

9. Motorola Karma QA1 AT&T

10.Sanyo Katana II Kajeet

Please visit ewg.org/cellphone-radiation/ to view the report and see the entire list.

As pointed out by the CTIA, the wireless industry’s lobbying group, there is yet no conclusive and fully substantiated study about cell phone dangers. However, it is no secret that government agencies in some countries have started to post warnings and direct cell phone manufacturers to clearly indicate the amount of radiation that each model they sell to the public actually emits.

Until we’re finally able to bridge that gap in our knowledge on the dangers of cell phone radiation, we can only take precautionary measures to protect ourselves. One important way to protect our health, is by buying or purchasing mobile phone models that have the least amount of radiation.
